Competitive Bidding

The Competitive Bid Program is currently on hold. It is expected to start up again in January 2021. In the meantime, we may be able to bill certain items through Medicare that we previously could not due to the Competitive Bid Program. However, there are some items we do not provide through Medicare and we may not accept assignment on certain items. You can learn more about what this means for you on our insurance questions page

The information below may be relevant again if/when the bid goes back into place and the Zip Code Lookup Tool can still be valuable in finding a company that accepts assignment of your Medicare benefits or provides a product we do not.

The DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program was mandated by Congress through the Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA). The result of this program is that Medicare has limited the number of suppliers in certain areas. Unfortunately, our company does not have “the bid” for these local areas (i.e.: Plymouth, Kingston, Carver, Middleboro, Pembroke, Marshfield, Hanover, Plympton, Halifax, etc.). According to the Competitive Bidding Program, if your Medicare address is listed in these areas we will no longer be able to supply you with certain pieces of equipment (hospital beds, wheelchairs, CPAP, commodes, oxygen, walkers, Hoyer lifts, seat lift chairs, and more). The only supplies that we can help Medicare patients with (living in this area) are:

  • Crutches
  • Cervical Collars
  • Canes/Quad Canes
  • Orthotic Supplies
  • Suction Machines
  • Compression Stockings (if qualified)

To find Durable Medical Equipment Companies you can use, you have two options:

  1. Call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE or 1-800-633-4227
  2. Use Medicare's Zip Code lookup tool. The zip code you use must be for the address where you or the patient receive Medicare statements as this is considered the home address and will dictate treatment under the "Competitive Bidding" program.

If you are unhappy with this situation, please contact Medicare directly to file complaints with them.

  1. Call 1-800-MEDICARE
  2. Ask to submit your complaint to the CAO (Competitive Acquisition Ombudsman). The CAO helps to ensure that your complaint is resolved.
